How do I schedule an appointment?

The quickest and easiest way to get started is to call and schedule an initial appointment. You can email me or call me and I will respond within 24 hours.

What can I expect in our first session?

In our initial session I will explain what therapy is and what you can expect from our time together. I will also be getting to know you and work on establishing our goals for therapy and assess if our partnership will be a good fit. I believe there is a good therapist for everyone and if there is a better fit I will work to find that therapist for you.

When I arrive where should I go?

When you arrive feel to make yourself comfortable in our waiting room and I will come and greet You when it’s time to get started.

Is there paperwork I need to complete for our first meeting?

Yes. Please complete the following documents below which will help us make the most efficient use of your time.

How much do you charge?

Steve Riser charges $125 per 50 minute session. If you are concerned with Steve Riser’s fees please discuss this with him.  He is willing to work with individuals based on their needs as well as partner with churches to provide excellent counseling services

How often do I have to come in?

Initially weekly sessions are recommended. Sometimes individuals prefer to meet  more than that and more than an hour session. You can discuss this with your counselor. It is always best to meet weekly until a plan of termination is established.

How confidential is counseling?

Counseling is what is referred to as a privileged relationship. It is the clients privilege. This means that they are in control of what information is shared and who it is shared with. Steve Riser cannot acknowledge your counseling relationship without your authorized written consent. A written document called a release of information must be signed by the client indicating who he can discuss information with and for what purpose. Steve Riser is so protective of his clients and that he will not approach them in public. It is always possible that client and therapist may run into each other in a public setting. How is confidentiality different in marriage and family counseling?

Information in couples counseling is kept confidential and requires both parties to consent in order to release information. Steve Riser’s informed consent discusses this further as well as possible divorce and court concerns.

When seeing a minor child, Steve Riser requires informed consent from both parents, even in the case of divorced parents unless documentation can be provided  that one parent has sole custody and can make mental health decisions for their child.

Do you accept insurance?

Currently Steve Riser does not accept insurance but understands this is an important concern.  Most insurance companies will cover  your counseling outside of network. Please check with your provider and Steve Riser will provide  you with all the information to file yourself. Keep in mind that insurance companies will want a diagnosis to file and insurance companies do not cover certain types of treatment. Steve Riser is very sensitive to his clients confidentiality and in giving a diagnosis which might effect their insurance benefits in the future. Discuss with him your concerns.

Steve Riser was trained in a Seminary, how does this effect his counseling?

Steve Riser is a Christian and this impacts all that he does. In counseling Steve takes a compassionate, loving grace based approach. He recognizes and respects that a person’s spiritual life is not only essential to their growth, but also a personal and sacred part of who they are. Individuals from a ChristIan perspective and non-Christian perspective can be assured they will be treated with honor and respect.  Steve Riser is sensitive to others spiritual perspectives and beliefs and meets all without judgement or criticism.

Steve Riser is bound by state and federal licensure boards which have a code of conduct and ethical guidelines for therapy.  He is obligated by his beliefs and his ethical standards to meet you where you are and it is not his job to convert you to his belief system. When you need guidance for spiritual matters outside of his experience he will refer you to your pastor or spiritual leader as well as collaborate with them should you want him to.
